As Arnott and Carla drove off, Arnott considered Mosami's explanation. Jealousy. He felt an overwhelming, exhausted relief. He had been right all along. He had hated that bitch Jensen from day one. Never trusted her. She was just too clever by half. Riddled with jealousy. She should have known what she had taken on. But he had controlled it, would control her. What he had done to Mosami should be a lesson. They would keep their mouths shut. This would not be a disaster. He was in control.

He gripped the steering wheel and drove Carla home. Twenty minutes later, he was in his own house, in Holland Park. He walked upstairs to his bedroom, dropped his clothes on the floor, and got into bed. Lying on his back in the darkness, he opened the drawer in his bedside table and took out a bottle. He removed three sleeping tablets, swallowed them without water, and lay, eyes open, staring at the ceiling, until the narcotics hit and he fell asleep.
